Initial PPC setup - Pocket PC 2002

The first step if you are using an Axim X5 or another PPC that uses an accessory WiFi card (rather than built-in WiFi) is to set up the drivers for your adapter. Most cards are supplied with a CD containing drivers necessary for use with Pocket PC2002 or Windows Mobile 2003, but it’s usually worthwhile to look at the manufacturer’s website to see if they have released newer drivers. Nearly all cards require the driver software to be installed onto the PPC before inserting the card. To do this, create an ActiveSync connection (using your normal USB, serial or IR connection) and run the installation file on the PC. After installing the driver, perform a soft reset and then insert the card into the CF slot and it should be recognized and ready for use.

To configure the connection in Pocket PC 2002:

• Tap on Start, Settings, Connections (tab) and select the “Network Adapters”. Your network card should be listed here.
• Select that card and tap “Properties”. In most cases, you can simply use the “DHCP” option. That tells your network card to get its IP address info from the network. If you do this, you do not need to manually assign an address, gateway, DNS, etc. You also won’t have to worry about changing any of this info when you travel between home and work.
• If your particular network needs special settings, then you must enter those here. This is the information you collected to set up your router.
